The Lead Farm Hand will be part of a growing and dynamic team while assisting with the day-to-day operations of an urban farm in Phoenix, Arizona. This ½ acre property with a historic home grows a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and herbs and raises a small number of chickens, ducks, and quails for eggs and meat. There are several ponds with fresh tilapia and crawdads that offer opportunities to expand our production.
In the role of Lead Farm Hand, he or she will work directly with the Farm Manager to implement strategies to maximize farm production, elevate the property’s overall appearance and further our reach to educate others regarding urban farming through our company’s YouTube channel, website and outreach. The individual will also have the opportunity to use their creativity and be part of a cutting-edge axillary property.
This individual will work as part of a team and individually to complete projects related to agriculture, landscape and property maintenance, animal care, and content creation. The individual will utilize multi-faceted skills to care for the property and ensure all areas are in working order, clean, organized, productive and secure.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Two or more years of relevant or equivalent work experience in urban agriculture/ landscaping services
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass a background check
EXPERIENCE OR A PASSION TO LEARN:
- Organic farming techniques including knowledge of crop planning, integrated pest management and productivity in an urban environment
- Pond maintenance
- Aquaponic Systems: setup, maintenance and caring for aquatic life
- Irrigation
- Basic home repair including electrical and plumbing repair
- Small engine and tool maintenance
- Knowledge of native and non-native plants
- Tree care
- Animal husbandry (i.e. raising chickens and other animals)
- Apiculture (beekeeping)
- Off-grid culture and dynamics
ESSENTIAL SKILLS IN:
- Exceptional organizational, record keeping, and time management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Teams are used regularly)
- Highly adept in problem solving and finding creative solutions
- Ability to multi-task and manage a wide variety of projects simultaneously
- Strong people skills are necessary to develop and maintain relationships with all team members and outside vendors
- Leadership skills including but not limited to ability to delegate and follow up
- Detail oriented and observant with excellent critical thinking skills
- Willing and able to accept feedback gracefully and adapt accordingly
- Interested in collaborating on and producing content for the farm’s social media and educational platforms (including YouTube videos, blogs, etc.)
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Able to lift and carry 50 lbs., stand, crouch and bend over for periods of time.

PAY STRUCTURE:

WORK SHIFT:
Primarily weekdays, weekends are rotational between farm staff for an hour each weekend to feed the animals. Rare extra weekend work may be required for special events. Limited travel to northern property for special projects.
