Full-Time position in Livestock Enterprise at Blue Hill Ranch

Employees at Blue Hill Ranch (BHR) have a unique opportunity to inquire a one of a kind experiences in production agriculture. You will have the opportunity to work on our 4th-generation operation that encompasses many different sectors of agriculture. You will gain experience in hands-on livestock experience, with a competitive registered Angus herd, and strong embryo development program. We are willing to teach any individuals who want to learn our business philosophy.

The Registered Angus herd started in 2005, with 6 cows. That number has grown to over 500 today. We have been a closed herd for eight years, with all new additions being brought in through embryos’ or semen straws. In addition, we use the progeny to restock our own herd. We sell approximately 100 bulls in Texas and 50-70 bulls locally each year.

Employees can expect to work in a fast pace environment. That holds efficiency as key in day to day operations. Employees will have the ability to specialize in certain sections of the livestock segment of our operation.

⚠️ We do not use or have horses. All of our cattle work is done by 4-wheeler and UTV.

Your Primary Responsibilities

  • Feed and take of cattle and calving activities
  • Monitor condition of pastures; rotate livestock to new pastures as needed
  • Monitor stocks of feed, supplements, salt, and mineral; restock supplies as directed
  • Assist in coordinating branding and replacement heifer number identification processes
  • Perform spring and fall vaccinations and assist vets in pregnancy, semen, and trichinosis testing activities
  • Monitor breeding stock condition (bulls, replacement heifers, and brood cows).
  • Monitor herd health in pastures and feedlots; make treatments where feasible or arrange for vet services as needed; and, insure that essential veterinary equipment and supplies are on hand
  • Perform routine maintenance on barns, corrals, fences, and hay feeders
  • Participate in hay harvest

Your Secondary Responsibilities/Learning Opportunities

  • Fencing: priorities, development of work lists, locating fence post supplies
  • Pasture utilization: number of head to place, desired season of use; dates to move
  • Branding: identifying heifers to be shoulder branded for potential replacements
  • Breeding Season: when to turn bulls out; which bulls to match with cow herds; AI – ET work; Donor cows
  • Cow herd: location placement-which cows to place in each breeding or wintering locations
  • Winter feeding program: feeding, numbers to feed at each location
  • Feed: tonnage needed, desired mix in ration, delivery time desired
  • Herd Health: recommendations for timing and nature of vaccinations needed; face fly bags, etc.
  • Cattle Records: maintain updated lists of calving records; cow records on historical calving performance; bull management data; replacement heifer data; and other data relevant to management of cattle operation
