How to Apply

Focus Ranch is historically a working cattle and  guest ranch but is currently only operating as a yearling cattle ranch. We are located on the Colorado/Wyoming border with land in both states. Steamboat Springs is 50 miles from our location. The yearling cattle (approx. 1,200 head) are primarily run on both private and forest permit land (Medicine Bow National Forest) in Wyoming. We also run a small number of cow/calf pairs. The Little Snake River flows through the property for approximately 3 miles and is world class trout stream.

We are looking for a person with multiple skills that are needed in the everyday operation of a ranch. Horseback riding skills are a plus but not an absolute. As the seasons change, so do the jobs. Duties vary at different times of the year and can include cattle work, operation of equipment, facility maintenance, fencing, irrigation, cooking, cleaning, snow removal with shovel or blower, feeding horses and cows, mechanics, errands in town, welding. We don’t expect applicants to have all these skills but a variety of skills and job experiences are a plus. The main cattle season runs from spring to fall. The off season is late fall, winter and early spring.  There is a crew of about 5-6 from spring into fall and during the late fall and winter, only a ranch worker along with the owners live here. Friends and family visit throughout the various seasons.

This position includes onsite housing and meals during the peak season. During the off season, you cook your own meals but food is provided. Other perks include high speed internet, laundry facilities and satellite tv. Accommodations are a private cabin.

Days off: 1 day during the peak cattle season as a rule but this is negotiable. If year round, the schedule is adjusted to the individual with shorter days in the the winter months, vacation time and holidays also considered and mutually agreed upon.

No housing available for families. Couples can apply.

No pets as a rule but exceptions will be made if suitable.

No smoking.

Position: Flexible starting date of July, 2026.

Requirements:

  • Able to work independently or with a team.
  • Must be 21 yrs of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Able to move / lift / maneuver up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be in good health as medical facilities are distant

In summary, we are looking for an individual wanting a ranch life and who has the necessary skills to perform the daily duties as the seasons change. Must work well with others, be physically able to perform the job and able to live in a somewhat remote setting.

This position is ideally suited for someone looking for a career change later in life or a semi-retired individual. In our experience, a younger person finds the distance from town unappealing and limiting for social connection. Towns are from 30 to 50 miles away.

Must have your own vehicle (4wd recommended). Must have reliable work references. A background check might be conducted based on the employer’s discretion.

Important to have familiarity with living in a snowy environment if long term employment. Must be comfortable working independently for part of the year.

Recreational activities include fly fishing, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling (your own machine), hunting to name a few!
