Camp Denali is a small, family-run wilderness lodge located in the heart of Denali National Park. The Park Road is temporarily closed at its midway point, meaning that our only access is by air. For the past two seasons, we have successfully operated as a fly-in lodge and we will continue to do so until the Park Road reopens for the 2027 summer season.

Position Description

Operations crew members perform daily tasks such as cleaning vehicles, maintaining buildings, grounds, systems and appliances, and specific construction/demolition projects, both as a team and individually.

Compensation

Operations Crew members bring a range of skills, experience, and expertise. Individuals who bring past professional experience in the trades will be compensated at a higher hourly rate.

  • Operations Crew: $16.00 per hour / $24.00 per OT hour / $164.00 per 9.5-hour day.
  • Skilled Operations Crew: Starting at $18.00 per hour / $27.00 per OT hour / $184.50 per 9.5-hour day.

Employer may pay higher wages based on seniority with Camp Denali and level of skill. Room and professionally prepared meals are provided free for the summer. A travel stipend is paid upon completion of a full season. Gratuities are pooled and divided equally among all staff, amounting to approximately $500/person/month.

Major Functions

The operations crew repairs and maintains all facilities, systems, vehicles, and grounds ensuring that our facilities look great and function smoothly. Work includes carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical work, vehicle maintenance, and many routines such as washing vehicles, splitting wood, maintaining trails and gravel roads, swatting mosquitoes, and painting.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

An ideal candidate will have multiple years of experience with one or more of the following: building construction, trail work, small engine/auto repair, alternative energy systems, electrical and plumbing systems, woodworking, and/or large equipment operation. It is a basic requirement that operations crew members bring familiarity with hand and power tools, how to safely operate them, and properly care for them. Previous experience as a maintenance generalist and/or experience working in Alaska or in a backcountry environment are both pluses. Key to success in this position is the ability to switch between being an effective member of a collaborative team and being self-motivated when working independently.

Other Requirements

  • Bring a genuine desire to live and work in a remote, self-sufficient, small community setting.
  • Because of the nature of operations work, this position requires significant physical stamina.
  • Please be aware that if there is a perceived spike in COVID cases, one of the mitigation strategies could be for staff to wear face masks when working indoors.
  • All staff are required to have a current Alaska Food Worker card (online, on-demand, valid for three years).

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Maintenance tasks require working outdoors, regardless of rain, snow, mosquitoes, heat or cold. Personal protective equipment is provided to mitigate exposure to hazardous materials, loud noise, power tools, and other hazards associated with maintenance tasks. Physical demands include being on one’s feet for long periods, walking up steep, uneven, hilly terrain, and lifting/carrying heavy loads. Digging and maneuvering on ladders and in/under small spaces are also regular requirements of the position.
