THE DEPARTMENT:

The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) consists of approximately 160 FTE and is responsible for the development and protection of the University’s assets and facilities. It serves as the capital program of approximately $300 million in planning and construction and supports the campus natural and built environment with more than 200 buildings on more than 1,400 acres and is also responsible for the coordinated planning, development and usage of the University’s land and facilities including land master planning, project planning, building design and construction, building occupancy and infrastructure (roads, transportation systems , telecommunications, sewer, gas, water , and electric.)

The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center (AHC) is dedicated to promoting the legacy of the Kellogg Arabians by providing a venue where students and the public can learn more about Arabian horses. The AHC provides an environment where students can learn about the Arabian Horses and the horse industry, support the learn-by-doing educational mission of the University, and continues the tradition of breeding and raising high quality horses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Pasture Technician will perform all work activities related to the production of healthy pastures at the Arabian Horse Center by planning the planting of the pastures, determining and applying pesticides, and determining irrigation schedules. The incumbent will requisition supplies and materials required in the operations of the crop specialty or general farm unit and maintain expense, crop production, chemical use, irrigation, crop rotation and other farm management records; maintain pastures and farm structures by operating a variety of complex multi-operational farm equipment as tractors, skid steers, irrigation pipes and sprinklers and spraying rigs; perform routine service of farm vehicles and equipment such as refueling, minor lubrication and cleanup as required to support crop production. As required, the incumbent will engage in general farming tasks such as loading and unloading trucks, maintaining and repairing fences, roads and pasture farm structures; keep the manager of Horticulture & Landscape Services, and the AHC Director informed of the status of pastures and equipment maintenance; keep AHC personnel, including Livestock Techs and office personnel, informed in order to increase and improve communication; communicate and coordinate the maintenance and repairs of facilities and equipment as needed. The incumbent will maintain accurate operational records relating to equipment usage including state required documentation on vehicles, maintenance schedules, project work time and chemical utilization; maintain records on pastures; ensure university procedures are followed and files are maintained; coordinate with Administrative Support Coordinator and other AHC team members as needed as well as perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to 60 semester or 90 quarter units of academic work at a recognized college or university, including agriculture and science courses applicable to the production of general field and specialty crops. (Additional specialized experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of experience for each 30 semester or 45 quarter units of accredited college work) AND three years of progressively responsible experience in the production of field, garden, vegetable or specialty crops (orchards, vineyards, feed crops, etc.). Possesses a valid Class C California Driver’s Licence appropriate for each vehicle operated including any farm labor truck, a single vehicle with three or more axles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Science, Plant Science, or closely related field. Qualified Applicator’s Certificate or Qualified Applicator’s License and a Commercial driver’s licence is preferred.
