We are looking for an exceptional, hands-on couple to live and work on a beautiful, private 175-acre family ranch in the mountains of Northern California near Burney.
This is much more than a caretaker position. It is an opportunity for the right couple, or small family, to embrace a truly self-sufficient lifestyle on an extraordinary piece of land.
The ranch offers private lakes, abundant fresh mountain spring water, a large established garden, greenhouse, orchards, berries, food storage and preservation opportunities, wildlife and hunting opportunities, and the space and resources to live remarkably close to the land. If your idea of a great life involves growing and preserving your own food, working outdoors, fixing things yourself, watching the seasons change, and being largely self-sufficient, you may have just found home.
The Living Arrangement
Caretakers are provided with a private 1,700-square-foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bath home on the ranch with:
- Full kitchen with new appliances
- Laundry room
- All utilities included
- Starlink high-speed internet
- No rent
- Fresh mountain spring water
- Space for a couple or small family
With housing, utilities, water and internet provided, and the ability to grow, harvest and preserve a significant amount of your own food, day-to-day living expenses can be exceptionally low.
The Role
We are looking for one primary caretaker, ideally as part of a capable couple who would both enjoy ranch life. The caretaker position is paid in addition to the housing and utilities provided.
The workload is seasonal, averaging approximately 30–40 hours per week during the summer and 20–30 hours per week during the winter. Because only one person needs to fill the primary caretaker role, this could be an ideal arrangement for a couple where the second person works remotely. Full Starlink internet is provided.
Responsibilities will vary with the seasons and needs of the ranch and may include property and grounds maintenance, gardening and greenhouse management, orchard care, irrigation and water systems, basic repairs, mowing, equipment upkeep, fire preparedness, snow and winter maintenance, monitoring the property, and generally keeping the ranch healthy, functional and well cared for.
Who We’re Looking For
Our ideal caretakers are true homesteaders at heart: resourceful, hardworking, mechanically inclined, responsible and genuinely excited about rural, off-grid living.
You should be comfortable with solitude, changing weather, physical work and solving problems without needing someone to tell you what to do next. Experience with ranches, farms, homesteads, large rural properties, gardening, irrigation, equipment, carpentry, mechanical systems or general maintenance would be highly valuable.
Just as important, we are looking for people with excellent judgment and integrity who will respect the ranch as both a working property and a beloved family home.
This is not the right fit for someone simply looking for free housing. It is an incredible fit for people who have been searching for the opportunity to build a simpler, more independent life and put their skills to use caring for a very special place.
