RANCH GROUNDSKEEPER
Job Description
Position: Ranch Groundskeeper
Reports To: Ranch Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Position Summary
The Ranch Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the appearance, cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of the ranch grounds and surrounding property. This position requires a dependable, hardworking individual who takes pride in maintaining a large ranch property and is comfortable working independently in outdoor conditions.
The Groundskeeper will perform general landscaping, grounds maintenance, property cleanup, minor repairs, equipment care, and routine inspections throughout the ranch.
Primary Responsibilities
Grounds & Landscaping
- Mow, weed-eat, edge, and maintain lawns and grassy areas.
- Remove weeds from flower beds, roadways, walkways, and around buildings.
- Trim trees, limbs, bushes, and vegetation away from buildings, fences, roads, and walkways.
- Maintain flower beds, landscaping, sidewalks, and common areas.
- Fill and smooth holes or disturbed areas around landscaped areas.
- Keep the ranch grounds neat, clean, and presentable at all times.
- Pick up fallen limbs, branches, trash, and other debris throughout the property.
Roads, Fences & Property
- Inspect and maintain driveways requiring attention.
- Address areas where gravel, rocks, or debris have washed onto roads and concrete crossings.
- Inspect and maintain perimeter fence around compounds and buildings.
- Keep vegetation trimmed away from fences.
- Monitor gates, crossings, and other areas of the property for damage or maintenance needs.
- Report larger maintenance issues to the Ranch Manager.
Buildings & Facilities
- Keep barns, storage areas, work areas, and other ranch facilities clean and organized.
- Sweep, mop, and clean the barn as needed.
- Keep tools and work benches organized and in good condition.
- Assist with general upkeep around ranch buildings and facilities.
- Help prepare the ranch and facilities prior to the owner’s arrival or special events.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining outdoor entertaining areas, pavilions, furniture, and other ranch amenities.
Equipment & Vehicles
- Properly operate and care for ranch equipment, including mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, pressure washers, and other grounds-maintenance equipment.
- Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance on equipment.
- Keep equipment stored properly and ready for use.
- Report equipment damage, mechanical problems, or needed repairs promptly.
- Wash, clean, fuel, and prepare ranch vehicles and recreational equipment as requested.
Lake & Recreational Areas
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of lake areas, pavilions, docks, and surrounding grounds.
- Clean and prepare outdoor furniture and recreational areas.
- Assist with preparing boats and other recreational equipment for use.
- Keep lake-area walkways and surrounding areas free of debris and overgrown vegetation.
Wildlife & Ranch Awareness
- Immediately notify the Ranch Manager or Owner if an animal appears sick, injured, or deceased.
- Report unusual conditions, hazards, damaged fencing, or other concerns observed while working throughout the ranch.
General Expectations
- Arrive on time and be dependable.
- Take pride in the appearance and condition of the ranch.
- Work safely and use equipment properly.
- Be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Pay attention to detail and identify maintenance issues before they become larger problems.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Be willing to perform a variety of tasks as ranch needs change.
- Communicate promptly regarding completed work, problems, repairs, or unusual conditions.
- Treat the ranch property, equipment, vehicles, buildings, and wildlife with care and respect.
- Maintain a professional and respectful attitude toward the ranch owner, manager, guests, and other employees.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment, materials, and supplies as required.
- Ability to safely operate grounds-maintenance equipment and ranch tools.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work on a regular basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working on a ranch, large property, estate, farm, or grounds-maintenance operation.
- Experience operating mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, chainsaws, tractors, pressure washers, and similar equipment.
- Basic knowledge of landscaping, property maintenance, and general repairs.
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Ability to recognize problems and take appropriate action without constant supervision.
Overall Goal
The Ranch Groundskeeper is expected to help keep the entire ranch clean, safe, well-maintained, organized, and presentable, while identifying maintenance needs and bringing them to the attention of the Ranch Manager or Owner.
