A privately-owned Carmel Valley ranch is seeking a full-time, long-term, live-onsite Ranch Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a large working cattle ranch. This candidate should have prior experience in animal husbandry, equine care, and managing and caring for a large herd of cattle. The ideal candidate will be adept at general ranch/property caretaking including property security, groundskeeping, water supply maintenance, minor ranch/property repairs, and project management. The ability to operate ATVs, tractors, basic power tools such as chainsaws, is a must. This position requires extreme flexibility in scheduling with the ability and willingness to work longer hours and weekends as needed and when principal and guests are in-residence. Additionally, this position will work collaboratively with the live-in/onsite House Manager/Handyman. Using one’s personal horse(s) on the property is allowed and encouraged. Live-in accommodations on property will be provided.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Thoroughly and fully manage property and surrounding areas while ensuring overall security
  • Run the day-to-day operations of an expansive working cattle ranch (150+ herd)
  • Animal husbandry including cattle breeding, handling, branding, and managing cattle sales
  • Care for three retired horses including monitoring and overseeing their health
  • Manage and/or assisting with future riding horse purchases
  • Maintain ranch plumbing and spring-fed water sources
  • General groundskeeping including mowing and trimming around property buildings to limit fire hazards and maintain fire safety
  • Maintain and repair ranch fencing
  • Operate chainsaws to cut firewood and downed trees
  • Ranch vehicle maintenance including a pickup truck, tractors, and ATVs
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise contractors and vendors
  • Manage ranch/property projects including water pipe repairs, road maintenance, painting/maintaining barn and cottages
  • Successfully work with House Manager/Handyman who runs the day-to-day operations of the main residence, apartment accommodations, and guest cottages
  • Additional responsibilities as needed and requested by the principal
