Reports to: Barn Manager Hours: Variable, but no more than 40 hours/week

SUMMARY: Wranglers are the heart of our business at Kohala Horse Adventures (KHA) dba Paniolo Adventures. Wranglers lead trail rides and perform daily care for our herd of trail horses. Wranglers are responsible for guest and horse safety, while functioning as a Big Island ambassador, riding and safety instructor. When not leading trail rides, Wranglers perform numerous barn and equine maintenance activities under the supervision of the Barn Manager.
This position is, as are all positions at KHA, at-will.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Because of KHA’s commitment to providing the highest quality trail riding experience to its guests and to the maximum best health of its trail horse herd, each employee is expected to perform a wide range of horse husbandry, barn, and office duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to employees’ regular responsibilities.

Trail Ride and Equine Care: Greeting guests, instructing guests in basic horsemanship and KHA’s safety protocols; daily horse care, including feeding, grooming, washing, tacking up; and basic ranch maintenance (minor fence work, grounds keeping, ensuring all areas–public and non-public–are clean and tidy.

At all times, Wranglers must represent our business and our horses in a positive and
professional manner. Accurately record daily hours worked and tip record keeping. Accurately and timely fill out ride logs immediately after each ride. Perform non-trail ride duties as assigned by Barn Manager, such as feeding, grooming, cleaning of horses; premises and tack maintenance. Attend training activities as provided. Keep CPR and First Aids certificates up to date.

Premises Maintenance: At the direction of the Barn Manager, perform maintenance of barn, staging area, tack, fences, and premises, including trails and grounds to ensure that the premises are safe and present a professional appearance; move feed pallets and other heavy materials; manage manure collection and disposal; maintain vehicles and other motorized equipment; fix or arrange repair of vehicles or other equipment.

Guest Relations: Under the supervision of the Barn Manager, identify available horses and assign to guests to fit guests’ skill level, experience, and size and assign guests to riding groups; instruct guests in basic horsemanship and trail riding and safety protocols; interact, educate and entertain guests during trail rides; report any guest’s negative experience or comments to Barn Manager; timely and accurately complete trail ride log.

Reporting: Report any accident or injury to a guest or horse immediately to the Barn Manager; promptly and accurately complete and submit incident reports as required by KHA policy and procedure; accurately complete ride log immediately after each ride. Promptly inform the Barn Manager of any noticed safety issue.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum of a high school diploma. Preference for some college or a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-year college or university; must be skilled in horsemanship and possess a solid working knowledge of equine behavioral management, grooming, and riding and training with a herd of diverse breeds. Must be able to provide videos of tacking up and riding, or an in person interview to show off horsemanship skills.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS: Flexible schedule and availability, including holidays and weekends.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to teach horsemanship skills and safety protocols to guests from a wide variety of cultures and with a diverse range of equine experience; respond to inquiries or complaints from guests and employees in a respectful manner. Knowledge of languages in addition to English a plus, particularly Japanese.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid state driver’s license and be insurable; current CPR and First Aid certifications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by Wranglers to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily outdoors in a rural setting. There is common exposure to all types of weather, including wind and rain. The work includes exposure to co-workers and guests from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Must be able to lift -60 pounds continuously.
