The Walker Basin Conservancy (Conservancy) is leading the effort to restore and maintain Walker
Lake while protecting agricultural, environmental and recreational interests in the Walker Basin
(www.walkerbasin.org). The dynamic nature of the Conservancy and its diverse resource management portfolio provide unique opportunities to develop innovative, interdisciplinary conservation solutions while working closely with a dedicated and passionate staff. The Conservancy team is comprised of approximately 25 full-time employees, increasing up to 70 during our field season.

The Conservancy manages a complex real-property acquisition program, acquiring land, water and related interests from willing sellers in the Walker Basin for the benefit of Walker Lake and River, and manages intensive restoration and stewardship activities on thousands of acres in the Walker Basin.

JOB PURPOSE: The Fleet, Equipment & Facilities Senior Coordinator supports operations and ensures that Conservancy vehicles, farm machinery, small, motorized equipment tools and facilities, including housing, are safe and operational. The ideal candidate will possess basic maintenance and repair skills, high standards for vehicle, equipment, tool and facilities management and care, and the ability to critically assess safety and maintenance issues to organize and prioritize needs. The Senior Coordinator will maintain and repair vehicles, equipment and facilities in-house as able and coordinate more difficult maintenance and repairs with professional contractors. This position will help ensure our operations continue with limited interruptions, our staff, volunteers and stakeholders are safe, and the operational lifespan of the fleet, equipment, tools and facilities are maximized. The Senior Coordinator is an essential part of the Conservancy’s Land Conservation Team and our ability to manage resources effectively and efficiently.

A working knowledge of vehicle, large and small land management/agricultural equipment, and building operation, repair and maintenance is essential. The successful candidate will possess an interest in mentorship and teaching, as well as patience, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency and high level of comfort in the outdoors.

Essential Functions

In cooperation with the Field Manager and other staff as necessary, the Senior Coordinator will:

Fleet Stewardship (50%)

  • Operate, maintain and repair vehicles, such as trucks and ATVs, as able
  • Diagnose malfunctions and safety issues
  • Develop and manage vehicle inspection, maintenance and repair programs
  • Facilitate maintenance and repairs with contractors

Equipment Stewardship (30%)

  • Operate, maintain and repair farm machinery, such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, backhoes, water trucks, tractors, trailers, agricultural implements, pumps, irrigation systems and other small, motorized equipment, as able
  • Operate, maintain and repair hand and power tools
  • Diagnose malfunctions and safety issues
  • Develop and manage inspection, maintenance and repair programs
  • Facilitate maintenance and repairs with contractors

Facilities Stewardship (15%)

  • Building maintenance and repairs, including staff housing, such as painting and siding, windows and doors, cabinets, flooring, plumbing/fixtures and appliance installation, as able
  • Diagnose operational and safety issues
  • Develop and manage inspection, maintenance and repair programs
  • Facilitate maintenance and repairs with contractors

Other Functions (5%)

  • Assist with all aspects of successful field stewardship programs, including ground preparation, seeding, planting, irrigation, weed control and similar tasks as necessary
  • Identify native and non-native flora and fauna of Nevada
  • Develop a deep working knowledge of all vehicles and equipment, vegetation and wildlife conservation techniques used by the WBC, and project partners
  • Assist the Field Manager and Operations Coordinator in training employees on safe vehicle and equipment operation, basic maintenance, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Walker Basin Conservancy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing fleets, equipment and facilities
  • Ability to keep detailed records, communicate with other staff and supervisors, and work unsupervised to accomplish program tasks
  • General knowledge of vehicle, equipment and building operation, maintenance and repair
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment and vehicles
  • Ability to perform basic facilities maintenance and repair
  • Relevant practical experience with a natural resources or agricultural operation/organization
  • Ability to supervise staff training related to vehicle and equipment operation and maintenance
  • Clean driving record and a NV State driver’s license, or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire

Physical and Mental Requirements
Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use tools and equipment for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit and stand for long periods. Strength and dexterity to operate small, medium and heavy equipment. Strength and stamina to endure standing and working for long periods in extreme weather conditions. Dexterity and vision to observe oncoming traffic hazards and react quickly to emergency situations. Some heavy lifting (over 75 pounds) is occasionally required.

Working Conditions
This position often works in an outdoor setting with varying weather conditions, including, but not limited to extreme heat, dry conditions, rain, snow or hail, and extreme cold. Work sites will generally be in areas with at
least primitive road access for vehicles. Work sites will generally not have access to potable water, restroom facilities or cellphone signals, and staff will be expected to follow Leave No Trace principals on work sites without facilities. Work will frequently require hiking over rough terrain while carrying tools and equipment.

Position may occasionally be required to operate heavy machinery in hazardous environments. Environment is generally dirty, with prolonged exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, noise and odors. Frequent interruptions to planned work activities occur.

Salary & Benefits

Starting salary $21-23/hr depending on experience.
