The Groundskeeping / Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the general and daily upkeep of the property/edible garden and buildings, cleanliness, organization, and readiness. This position will report to the Maintenance Manager.

General Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining meticulous standards and daily upkeep of the property according to the cleaning lists, calendars, and family preferences
  • Commitment to maintaining rigorous organization standards
  • Vendor interfacing and project supervision as needed.

Main job tasks, duties, and responsibilities:

  • Potential for oversight of livestock handling (e.g., bees, chickens, fishpond)
  • Pest control management; gophers/voles/rats, etc. throughout gardens and interior property
  • Assist Maintenance Manager and Caretaker to prepare house/buildings for anticipated weather
  • Daily survey of the ranch to make sure all areas are in good condition and guest-ready
  • Working knowledge of lightweight ranch equipment and hand tools
  • General landscaping including a kitchen garden with a detailed view of weed and brush control, maintaining/fix irrigation lines, and leaf removal
  • Assist with general maintenance schedule (examples)
  • Keep building gutters free of debris
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, and polish garage and patio floors, exterior doors/windows/frames and coverings, and fencing/gates in guest areas with appropriate products
  • Support during guest visits (e.g., exterior cleaning/refresh, help with luggage, airport runs, approved errands)
  • Restock dog bags on trails
  • Able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Use initiative to suggest projects to improve processes
  • Check features/amenities are in working order or needs specialized cleaning; immediately report issues to Maintenance Manager.
  • General handyperson (e.g., change light bulbs, put basic equipment together, assemble shelves, chop firewood)
  • Routine ranch vehicle (mules, trucks) maintenance (e.g., check/monitor fluid levels)
  • Maintain organized storage areas in barn and storage yard including tools and small equipment; check the working condition
  • Oversight of First Aid kits in all structures (annual) to include checking expiration dates
  • Monitor and report necessary damage, domestic repairs/replacements, maintenance issues, and/or safety hazards
  • Respond to requests for housekeeping problems such as spills, broken glass
  • Work with the caretaker to implement weed and brush control and other emergency plans
  • Sort mail and packages following training for guests vs ranch supplies

Requirements of the job, to include all the below points:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion at all times; maintain professional attitude.
  • Ability to retain all information in the strictest of confidence and in accordance with requirements of the Confidentiality & Non-disclosure Agreement
  • Valid driver’s license/clean driving record; no significant litigation, driving infractions, or other legal violations
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Work schedule is Monday-Friday; 7:30a – 4:00p must be available on evenings, weekends, and holidays during events and guest visits
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards Principals, colleagues, guests, and visitors
  • Perform regularly scheduled tasks to maintain the overall wellness of the house according to household calendar
  • Positive and calm attitude
  • Follow all household safety and security procedures
  • Comfortable with and enthusiastic with neighbors and pets
  • Professional and polished appearance (work shirts and boots provided)
  • Ability to take initiative and a willingness to work hard
  • Ability to work both as part of a team as well as independently
  • Participate in training, other learning activities and professional development as required
  • Ability to use a smartphone to send email and text photos/messages to manager and colleagues
  • Good communication skills including the ability to listen carefully and ask the right questions to gain clarification, and knowledge of conversational Spanish a plus.
  • Helpful attitude and abilty to multi-task.
  • Reliability, including good timekeeping
  • High work standards including the ability to meet performance standards without supervision
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Able to lift, push, pull and carry a minimum weight of approximately 50 lbs. Able to kneel, bend, crouch and crawl.
  • Able to tolerate exposure to dust and cleaning chemicals
  • Able to climb a ladder and work safely from a height
